Buying a used car in Canada or the USA
Prices, taxes and paperwork differ on each side of the border. Canadian listings show prices in Canadian dollars and odometers in kilometres; US listings use US dollars and miles. Every listing page converts fuel economy to both L/100 km and MPG, and pulls safety recalls straight from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration so you can ask the seller whether recall work has been done.
Before you buy
- Decode the VIN and confirm the year, trim and engine match the ad.
- Check for open recalls and ask for service records.
- In Canada, request a vehicle history report and confirm there are no liens; in Ontario the seller must provide a Used Vehicle Information Package.
- Budget for sales tax (GST/HST/PST in Canada, state and local tax in the US), registration and insurance.
- Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection.
